Massachusetts Law Enforcement Memorial


Boston, MA. - The Massachusetts Law Enforcement Memorial is located in Ashburton Park next to the Massachusetts State House in Boston.  The memorial was dedicated on May 21, 2004 to honor the federal, state, county, local, and corrections officers who have died in the line of duty while serving in the state of Massachusetts.  

The memorial, which was designed by artist Michael Kenny, is composed of a granite badge with a black band across the badge.  Encircling the badge is a listing of the names of over 340 police officers who have died while serving in Massachusetts.  The phrase “Our strength is in their memories” is inscribed in the front memorial.

The Boston Public Library was one of three locations in the city of Boston to display the art work of longtime Bostonian and artist Allan Rohan Crite. Massachusetts Beirut Memorial honors Middle East peacekeepers

T wenty-eight years ago, one of the deadliest events in U.S. military history occurred.   On the morning of October 23, 1983 in Beirut, Lebanon, a suicide bomber drove a yellow Mercedes truck into the U.S. Marine Corps base at Beirut International Airport.   The truck was filled with 12,000 pounds of explosive materials.   The explosion decimated the four-story military base.   The attack killed a total of 241 U.S. service members: 220 Marines, 18 Navy personnel, and 3 Army soldiers.   At the time of the attack, there were 1,600 Marines in Lebanon serving as neutral peacekeepers for ongoing tension in the Middle East.   According to the FBI, the attack was (at the time) the biggest non-nuclear explosion since World War II.      “For Americans, Beirut was a seminal moment on a timeline that led to the 9/11 attacks, Afghanistan, Iraq and beyond.   It was a first shot in a clash with a militant, fundamentalist Islam – exemplified by groups...

A Century of Excellence: Charles River Esplanade Celebrates 100th Anniversary

2010 marks the 100th anniversary of the Massachusetts Department of Conservation & Recreation’s Charles River Esplanade. I write this article to highlight this great milestone. As a fourth year seasonal Ranger at the Teddy Ebersol’s Red Sox Fields which are located on the Esplanade, I have learned about the park’s unique features. The Esplanade is a well known and popular location that is used for a variety of recreational activities. The Esplanade is a unique place because it has numerous historical attributes portraying the rich history of the city of Boston and the DCR. The term Esplanade - first used in 1910 to describe the parkland, is a French word that means “promenade along a shore.” The Esplanade stretches approximately 3 miles along the Boston side of the Charles River, from the Boston University Bridge to the Museum of Science.
