Image
San Francisco, CA. – Robert Emmet (March 4, 1778 – September 20, 1803) was an Irish orator, patriot, and rebel leader.   Emmet and his family sympathized with the American colonist patriots during the American Revolution. In 1803, Emmet led a rebellion against British rule in Dublin, Ireland.   This rebellion failed and Emmet was ultimately captured and executed after being found guilty of treason against King George III of Great Britain.   In 1953, to commemorate the 150 th anniversary of his death, Emmet’s image was selected to be placed on two Irish postage stamps. At the Golden Gate Park in San Francisco, California, there is a monument dedicated to Robert Emmet.   Jerome Connor, an Irish sculptor, designed the monument in 1916.
