Historical Profile - Joseph B. Strauss
San Francisco, CA. – Joseph Baermann Strauss (January 9, 1870 – May 16, 1938) was a structural engineer who was known for his extensive work designing bridges. In 1892, Strauss graduated from the University of Cincinnati with a degree in civil engineering. Strauss was most well-known for his design work on the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, California. When the bridge opened in 1937, it was the longest and tallest suspension bridge in the world. Strauss also designed the Burnside Bridge in Portland, Oregon; the Lewis & Clark Bridge in Longview, Washington; and the Cherry Street Strauss Trunnion Bascule Bridge in Toronto, Ontario Canada.
