Gay Head Lighthouse
The Gay Head Lighthouse, Aquinnah, Massachusetts Aquinnah, MA. – For over 200 years, the Gay Head Lighthouse has served as a guide for sailors off the southeastern shores of Massachusetts. On November 7, 1799, the Gay Head Lighthouse was turned on for the first time. Ebenezer Skiff was appointed as the lighthouse keeper. In 1852, a report published by the Lighthouse board stated: “this light is not second to any on the eastern coast, and should be fitted, without delay, with a first order illuminating apparatus.” In 1956 the Lighthouse became completely automated. In 1994, the Martha’s Vineyard Museum became the steward of the Gay Head Lighthouse as well as the East Chop and Edgartown Lighthouses. These lighthouses send out light into the ocean to guide mariners. The lighthouses are also enjoyed by visitors providing them with views of Martha’s Vineyard and the Atlantic Ocean.
